Colorado Climate Bill Would Ban Gas-Powered Lawn Equipment Sales in Parts of the State

In Colorado, state lawmakers have introduced a climate and environment bill – Senate Bill 138 – that would outlaw gas-powered lawn equipment along the state’s northern Front Range area.

The proposed legislation would prohibit, beginning in 2030, the sale or advertising/marketing of devices with small off-road engines, including lawnmowers and leaf blowers, in those areas of the state with air pollution worse than what the federal Clean Air Act allows.

The legislation would also encourage people to switch to non-gas-powered lawn equipment by offering an income tax credit equal to 30 percent of the purchase price for new mowers and blowers bought in tax years 2023 through 2029.

The bill states that businesses using lawn equipment would be eligible for a rebate if they purchase electric alternatives.
